Metal Detecting Network
NEW LINK for info and pcb/schematic:
A DIY Simple PI Homemade Metal Detector. Using a basic 555 circuit with some additional parts.
The Simple PI in the video is using a 6 inch homemade coil (Don) with an approx. inductance of 330uH, .05 copper enamelled wire @ 28 turns potted with epoxy and foam. It is running on12v (8 AA batteries)
I tested it with many different coils from 300uH up to 550uH and best results with my particular settings was the 330uH coil. I’ll continue to mess with settings and exchanging certain parts to see if I can better the results.
So far with sensitivity/threshold set to just audible it will detect in air on the bench:
US Quarter – 6″ (faint at 7-1/2″)
US Nickel – 3″
US Dime – 4″
US Penny – 4″
Unknown coin same size as US dime – 4″
1/2″ square (folded) piece of aluminum pepsi can – 2″ (faint)
An Australian 20 piece – 6″ (faint at 7-1/2″)
Home Depot Husky box knife – 10″ (faint at 14″)
Pepsi can (empty) – 14″(on end) 15″ (on side)
These are just air tests on the bench, once it is setup in a control box it will be tested further on natural soil and ground conditions and then updated again.
So far so good, I will continue to update this if I can make it better.
If your looking to build your own detector you really need to have this book, “Inside the Metal Detector”. Its invaluable and has excellent metal detector projects in it.
