I have now mounted a larger spindle on my machine and have successfully cut parts in 1/8 brass sheet. More details on the blog,
Laser mounted on the 20$ machine already and did a first engraving run. Time to attempt some cutting. The laser used here is acheap laser case and lens, modified to hold a diode salvaged from an old DVD-RW drive. It CONSUMES arround 1 Watt and can easily burn wood at a respectable feedrate. But when cutting, things get more complicated! I didn’t manage to burn white paper, as white tends to reflect much of the light. But when I spray painted it black, it worked like a charm!
The design comes from a bitmap I found online. Croped it to get the desired pattern, converted it to a scalable vector, centerline traced it online to get single lines, and threw it into inkscape, where I produced the Gcode needed. Once done, I used Universal Gcode Sender to communicate with the arduino on the serial port.
Thanks for watching! Helps a lot.
