So Wes, aka “Welding 2012″ stopped by the farm yesterday and we tried out my scratch-start TIG rig. It ran really well, had a nice smooth arc and started easily.

Commonly asked questions….
1) Where can I find all the parts you have?
-Ebay. You can pick up a torch and flowmeter pretty cheap on there. A torch with a flex head is a great investment, and they only cost a few bucks more than the non-flex head torches. My HTP regulator was very affordable.
2) What about everything else? Like the power-lug and green hose?
-Your local LWS is your friend here. I took my torch and flow meter to Airgas and told the nice guy behind the counter what I wanted to do, and he wandered around the store for 10-20 mins putting the rig together for me. I paid a lot, like $100 for the power lug, hose, a couple tungstens and some filler rod. It wasnt cheap, but it was done. I’d highly recommend doing that, instead of ordering a bunch of parts on the internet, shipping them to you, and hoping they work.
3) Where do I buy tungsten, filler rod, collets, collet bodies, etc?
-Also on Ebay. I’m all for supporting local businesses if the cost is close, but the local welding supply charges roughly FIVE TIMES as much as I can find things online for, when you figure in the trip to ANOTHER STATE just to get there. Good lincoln electric filler metal is pretty reasonable from weldingsupplys.com, and like I said, ebay for everything else. I’d recommend getting an assortment of tig parts that will fit your series of torch (IE 17, 26, etc) and that way you just have the stuff around when you need it.
If you decide to get a StickWeld, they should be able to sell you a scratch-start setup for this welder, as it has a “GAS INLET” port on the back side of it. Check with them tho, I can’t confirm this.
