  • just a quick solar cooker idea

    Use the method shown in my last video to make the simplest mirror array. This is good for people with few resources and those who want to use green energy.

    I would make a recomendation that you do not make the solar array any bigger than that needed for a 400 to 500 degree oven. Were not making a “kiln” for ceramics here, were making a useable oven for cooking purposes. Since the “bottom” of the oven is to get hot, if your baking something like bread, you simply put it up off the bottom on a traditional style “rack” or “risers” such as 4 small stones or ceramic all of the same height. Don’t forget the somewhat formal standard of putting the cooking vessle on a “swing” type mechanism so that the solar oven box can be tilted and yet the cooking vessle remains in a fixed orientation. For something like a pizza and you want a nice firm-cooked thin crust then the bottom heat plate is a good location for that, but I can imagine you can build a simple type “pizza oven” type box also.

    A total mirror surface of 1 square meter is capable of delivering 1000 watts in ideal conditions. I doubt that those will be found with this type of cooking system and it also depends on time of day, weather, etc.. Experimentation needs to be done on total mirror size needed, and for various times in the day when the sun is not overhead. For example, Is half a square meter useable for this oven, or is 1 square meter needed?

    The cookers upper window and reflectors will let good energy in, enough for about 200 to 300 F, however, It is not mandatory to include those if the mirror array can supply all the energy needed. It would make an easier construction when less parts are needed. Experimentation is needed.

    Instead of a bottom heat plate for the solar energy, I guess it is possible to use a side heat plate (its possible others have/are using this as I seen recently but they used a large parabolic shaped mirror array and no upper glass plate since the “unit” was accesible from inside the side of the dewlling wall). This would eliminate the bottom heat plate mirror. Experimentation is needed to see if it would work ok., but could be less effeicient than a bottom plate since the bottom plate can be insulated from the wind better.

    SAFETY: Intense or concentrated solar energy is dangerous. Keep people and pets away from the beams of light. Constant attention must be taken to keep the beam on the target (bottom of the solar cooker, heat plate) since this is not an automatic system (yet?). The closer the oven is to the mirror array, the less the “beam drift” will appear, however you don’t block the Sun light on the mirror array.

    If you dont want to build the solar oven box, a pot with some proper insulation around it can probably be used in its place; just refelct the light to the bottom of this pot or pan. Still, a metal heat plate should be used to prevent the cook from being injured from the intense solar rays A flat-like metal box can be used as a solar “pizza oven”.

    Even though you would like the oven well insulated from the outside air heat loss, and to keep the energy contained withing the oven, I think you still need an air hole in the bottom (in the corners perhaps) and an outlet (since no air can come in if none can get out, and vice versa) hole in the top to vent moisture buildup, etc..

    I studied (some thought into) heliostats (a system that keeps solar light at a fixed location/target) a bit, and for best efficiency of the system, the face of the mirrors should face the Sun (at whatever angle it is currently in the sky) as much as possible and the target should go between the mirrors and the sun. Any less than that and efficiency will be reduced. This is basically hard to do throughout the day, do to overcome efficiency losses you can do something like make the arrray larger.

    This is a non-motorized, non-electric, and non-timed method since a person will be “steering” the mirror as needed during the cooking time. Motors and sun tracking/timing methods are very nice, but its not for the do-it-yourself / inexpensive crowd.

    Another possible idea is to put the light energy from the solar array into a window in the side of the solar oven, and that is easy by just reaiming the solar array.
